Distinguished Service Award

The Kiwanis Club of Chattanooga meets annual to celebrate one of its great traditions: “SERVING THE CHILDREN OF THE WORLD”. This motto is recognized as a symbol of our Club.

The Club keeps before itself the stated Objects of Kiwanis which have continued without change over many years. These Objects are:

  • To give primacy to the human and spiritual, rather than to the material values of life.
  • To encourage the daily living of the Golden Rule in all human relationships.
  • To promote the adoption of higher social, business and professional standards.
  • To develop, by precept and example, a more intelligent, aggressive and serviceable citizenship.
  • To provide, through this Club, a practical means to form enduring friendships, to render altruistic service, and to build a better community.
  • To cooperate in creating and maintaining that sound public opinion and high idealism which make possible the increase of righteousness, justice, patriotism, and good will.

Because of these objects the Kiwanis Club of Chattanooga established the Distinguished Service Award in 1922. The purpose of this award is to give fitting recognition to citizens, who, in the judgment of the Club membership, have rendered unselfish, constructive, and distinguished services to our community.

The high stature of this award could not have been achieved by the efforts of our Club alone. Its recognition as Chattanooga’s “Citizen of the Year” award has been earned by the outstanding group of men and women to whom it has been awarded over the years.

Educators, industrialists, news media, statesmen, and representatives from many other professions have been included. All of them have one thing in common: they have been outstanding leaders in our community and have accomplished much with their time, talent, and enterprise. Such outward accomplishments are a reflection of their still greater inner self. Those who have accepted this honor lend themselves to enhance it, dignify it, and to make its meaning real for all of us.
