History of the Chattanooga Kiwanis Club

Children Our Focus

The Chattanooga Kiwanis Club was formed in 1918.   It has raised close to  $3,000,000 during its lifetime to benefit the people of .Chattanooga.  Some of its projects that it has begun and nurtured have been:

  • Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Auditorium

  • Chamberlain Field at the University of Chattanooga

  • Sister Cities of Chattanooga

  • Boys and Girls Clubs

  • Chattanooga Convention and Visitors Bureau

  • Victim Offender Reconciliation Program

Each year we have provided up to  $100,000 to well run charitable groups in our area with the focus on the youth of our area.  There are a number of other projects as well  several student loan programs and other donations.

In the year 2000, our club gave  $130,000 toward the National Kiwanis project to eliminate Iodine Deficiency Disease.  IDD is a cause of mental retardation, goiter, and other problems, particularly in children and is most prevalent in Africa

The Kiwanis Club  provides volunteers for projects of many other service organizations: such as Channel 45 (PBS), Children's Miracle TV. the Salvation Army,  and many others.  These are the Kiwanis Kommandos.

As of 2005, we have changed our policy from mainly raising money to give to specific charities and are now mainly partnering with a number of them in their fund raising efforts.  This year's Track Club's Chattanooga Chase benefiting VORP and  the Duck Race for the Boys and Girls Club are examples.  This spring we will jointly sponsor the Market Basket project of the Partnership for Families, Children and Adults.  The project, "Arabian  Night", is a gala dinner and auction of donated items including  an Arabian Horse.  (partnershipfca.org)

We  be happy to accept your donation for one of these specific charities and will keep the donor anonymous if desired.
